KeymasterJim’s been having problems with the ordering of his photos in Windows 10 – here’s the problem detailed …
The situation is that my photos are in folders according to when they were taken, and they keep their original file names. I have three cameras, Canon, Lumix, and phone, so a folder could contain images from all three, each with their own numbering system. Bearing in mind I have Windows 10 on my laptop, when I want to view a folder I use File Explorer. This allows me to order the images either by Date or by Name (i.e. number). The latter groups the photos according to which camera took them.
Double clicking on a file name opens Microsoft Photos for me to view the photo. I can then view the next image by clicking on an arrow, on the screen or the keyboard. My problem is that sometimes the next image which appears isn’t the next one in the File Explorer list.
My preliminary findings suggest that it’s OK with the files in Name order, but it gets random if they are in Date order. However it seems to be able to cope with Date Taken order. Odd. I’d be interested to know if anybody else has the problem, in which case it’s File Explorer/Photos, not my laptop.
For once, I read this carefully! Very carefully! I came to the conclusion that it was not a user/laptop problem but seemed more to do with Windows Photos. It seems I was right (even more !!!!). Just do a search on this string “Windows Photos doesn’t show photos in date created order” !!!!!!! (that’s enough !) So what’s Jim got to do? Here’s what I wrote to him …
Here’s a solution that might work too (if all your folders are sub-folders of the default Pictures folder …
Your special folders (Doc, pics, vids, music) are the template for all folders of this type. Navigate to your Pictures folder (not the library). Set it how you want it (columns, column position, etc) hit the Organise button, select folder and search, hit the view tab, hit the apply to folder button, then Ok out of dialog.
Check to see whether Windows Photo Viewer is on your machine if you upgraded from Windows 7

A huge range of possibilities here, including getting Windows Photo Viewer back if the above shows that it’s not accessible from right-clicking an image (but first look at this tutorial – it’s much better – https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14312-restore-windows-photo-viewer-windows-10-a.html). Look at the Pros and Cons of each possible Photo Viewer alternative – I see Irfanview (which Owen mentioned) is in the list – to see which might best match your use case.
