ModeratorBack around last November, we upgraded our television.
We had a LG model previously but the picture quality just wasn’t all that good.
We bought a Philips 43″ Smart t.v. with High Definition and 4k. In retrospect, it was some of the best money that I ever spent.
We bought this model.
And it might not still be available because companies are forever changing their specifications.
However, I can heartily recommend this or any other Philips model.
A few weeks after it had arrived, my son-in-law was visiting. He said, “Oh, it has 4k”.
“4K?” I responded.
“Yes, 4k………..you don’t know what 4k is do you?”
My vague expression revealed my answer.
He explained that 4k was like ultra, sooper-dooper high definition. Apparently not many broadcasts are put out in 4k but there is content on Amazon Prime and on Youtube.
He showed me an example of 4k using Youtube. (Smart t.v.s can watch Youtube…..handy that.)
A few minutes later I lifted my jaw from the floor. The picture quality was simply stunning. If anything, more real than reality itself.
It has proven to be a real boon during lockdown. If you take a look on Youtube you’ll find many videos in 4k featuring city walks. These are nothing more than videos taken by people as they stroll around a city. I find these a most comforting way to remind me of The Beforetimes. Just this morning, I had my breakfast strolling around Rome. Only problem with them is that they frequently walk past a cafe or bar whereas I’d prefer to walk in to them.

One other aspect of the Philips t.v. is that it has a feature called Ambilight. Now it is tricky to explain this. Essentially it is a number of LCD lights on the back of the t.v. These can be set to cast an ambient glow onto the wall behind the t.v. thus giving the illusion of actually having a bigger screen. You can set it to glow with colours that match whatever is showing on the t.v. During rugby internationals you can even set it to follow the colours of the Welsh flag….or any other flag I suppose. I know it sounds cheesy and I’ll be honest, we don’t use it that often. However, if you are watching a Hollywood blockbuster then it really does set the scene.

The t.v. comes with a number pf pre-installed apps. iPlayer, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Youtube and many others.
One other neat feature:- it is Amazon Alexa enabled. It will link to an Echo device or you can talk to your t.v. through the remote. Thus, I can issue the command, “Alexa, volume up on Philips t.v.”…a really neat trick especially for people like me who happen to be named Philip.
As I said earlier, a great purchase that has really proven itself during these troubled times.
